10 Tips to Keep a Tidy Home

Hey there, let’s get some tidy home inspo. If you feel like you’re constantly cleaning but never actually achieving that fresh, organised feeling, you’re not alone. The secret to a tidy home isn’t cleaning 24/7—it’s about building smart habits that make tidiness effortless. Let’s dive into my top 10 tips to keep your home looking great, without the stress!

1. The Two-Minute Rule ⏳

If a task takes less than two minutes, do it right away! Whether it’s putting away your shoes, wiping down the counter, or tossing junk mail, these tiny tasks prevent mess from piling up. It’s my one touch method. Who wants to tidy twice? Don’t put it down, put it away!

2. Make Your Bed Every Morning 🛏️

Okay- I know you’ve heard this one to death but there is good reason for it. It’s a simple habit that sets the tone for a productive day. You’ll feel better about yourself, you’ll think clearer, the list goes on. But mostly, a made bed instantly makes your bedroom look put together. Let’s create a home we love.

3. Declutter as You Go 🚮

Instead of waiting for a big decluttering day, get in the habit of regularly tossing or donating things you don’t use. Let’s take it further and eliminate the pain points. You don’t make it easier to hang it back up than to get rid. That’s why you need a donation bag easily accessible. I have mine in the bottom of my wardrobe. Once it’s full, it gets put in the car and off it goes.If you haven’t worn it or used it in a year, it’s probably time to let it go. The less stuff to move around, the easier it is to keep the things you do have, tidy.

4. Have a Place for Everything 📦

My favoutire- give everything you own, a home. Clutter happens when things don’t have a designated spot. Invest in baskets, bins, and drawer organisers to give everything a home. This really helps with getting the kids or other family members on board with tidying up. If they know where it belongs, you have more chance of getting them to put it back when you ask them to tidy up. Or look for something for that matter!

5. Tidy in 10-Minute Bursts ⏰

Instead of dedicating hours to cleaning, gamify tidying up with timing yourself to get those quick tidy-up bursts under your belt. You’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish! Washing machine is on? Use that. Microwave is on? Use that. Airfryer..? Hubby on his way home..? Need to leave for the school pick up? All of these are great time constraints to motivate you to get those tidy ups done.

6. Clean as You Cook 🍳

Nobody likes facing a mountain of dishes after a meal. Wash utensils, wipe counters, and put ingredients away as you go to keep your kitchen chaos-free. You’re up on your feet. Do NOT sit down. Something in motion stays in motion. Just keep going with it while you’re up. But some music on or a podcast and let’s keep it going! Your after dinner self will thank you for it.

7. Focus on One Small Area to Declutter 🏡

Less stuff, less mess to clear. This is why it is important to always take stock of what you have. You won’t overbuy and you’ll know exactly what you’ve got. Decluttering is the key to knowing what you really have and being able to access everything you have. How to get there: Instead of feeling overwhelmed by an entire room, pick one small area—a drawer, a shelf, or a single corner—to declutter often. Small, frequent efforts keep your home organised without feeling like a huge chore. And you’ll feel bloody amazing after doing it!

8. Nightly Reset 🌙

Take 5–10 minutes every evening to reset your home. Put away stray items, wipe down surfaces, and fluff those couch pillows. Waking up to a tidy space is the best way to start your day!

9. Delegate Tasks 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

A tidy home is a team effort! Get your family or housemates involved by assigning small daily tasks so the responsibility doesn’t fall on one person. Again- knowing where everything goes and implementing systems in the home will make this possible.

10. Embrace Progress Over Perfection 🌟

Your home doesn’t need to look like a magazine cover—it just needs to feel good to live in. Don’t stress over every dust bunny; focus on maintaining a space that brings you joy.

By incorporating these simple habits, you’ll find that keeping your home tidy becomes second nature—without the overwhelm! Now tell me, which tip are you going to try first? Need a full overhaul?
